Well everybody, as sad and stupid as this sounds, this is the conclusion that I have come to.
Before I make myself sound incredible stupid, I am not the only one that has spoken these few words over the last few weeks. Many a time have I come into the library, or walked into my house mates bedrooms, and the words 'myspace is ruining my life' has been spoken!
But seriously...isn't all this social media a distraction!? I mean, I log onto a computer fully prepared to spend a day on my dissertation or an assignment, and suddenly i find myself logging in....Logging in not just to msn (oh no, not anymore) but myspace comes up straight away, facebook is a newly added addition, theres a few clubbing message boards I use (yes I know I'm sad but not many people are into the same music as me so its a good way to access music etc) and I even think I'm a member of something called faceparty if anyone remembers that from back in the day!
So are all these forms of interaction really worth it? Well I have thought about this and come up with reasons why myspace is actually a way to ruin someones life:
Remember when someone tried to sue 'friends reunited' for ruining their marriage?! Well i think a similar thing could be said for this. Myspace and other 'personal profile' pages allows people to stalk me, and more to the point- me to stalk them! And (this is not me by the way) I know SO MANY girls who read their boyfriends pages and say 'whose that girl commenting to him'??!! Its turning us into suspicious, jealous mad people (Im not just blaming girls here- boys are victims of this too!)
Its also a problem when trying to do your work, as mentioned above, which even if you say you just won't log in to something like this- you will check it all day and you will get addicted!
One final thought.....I had a 'friend request' the other day from a man called Gareth. He is 80 and had loads of 18 year old girls as his friends. When I didnt accept him as my friend, he sent me this message....any chance of an add. oes na rhiw chance o add. gareth xx ger caernarfon
Ummm no, no chance of an add- because I thought myspace was about making friends, not about being stalked by strange old men.
Anyway let me know your thoughts on this- and please don't accuse me of being sad, because I know half of you out there are doing the same.....

That is hilarious! and sooo true - social media is ruining our lives. The worst thing is - it's so impersonal! The number of times you are like 'I spoke to so and so the other day on myspace' - you didn't speak to them, you left them a comment. IT'S NOT REAL PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!
ok I think I've safely secured a fail in online PR...
peace out
A really thoughtful comment. Does this mean that there is aneed for some reserach into how different forms of social media affect the lives of users?
My guess is that there will be very divergent reponses. Soe will be victimes, others will be amused some use social media for very ernest work.
But is social media 'Ruining our lives'? Perhaps we are just learning how to use it to suit our own needs and cast off the things we dont want for those that we do.
